I just installed the 7.x-1.2 version and am puzzled on the settings page like

admin/structure/types/manage/article/auto_label

Leave blank for using the per default generated title. Otherwise this string will be used as title. Use the syntax [token] if you want to insert a replacement pattern.

is not helping much either.

Can we do better?

Hmmm ... after enabling token module (and entity_tokens) and disabled jquery_update I got the list of available tokens.

I don't understand why [node:nid] does not work without the token module. The README.txt states

Installation
------------
* (optional) Download and install the token module in order to get token
replacement help.

but it seems tokens for node only work with the token module enabled? That seems like a bug to me.
