I posted this https://drupal.org/node/2078257 issue to the search_api_spellcheck module. It needs to apply this https://drupal.org/files/search_api_solr_collate_support.patch patch to the search_api_solr module to avoid a PHP error.

Please report back here once the issue has been committed in the Spellcheck module. Before that, please just don't use collate with Search API Solr queries.

Is it correct to assume that Search Api/Search Api Solr does not support spellcheck out of the box and the module https://www.drupal.org/project/search_api_spellcheck is not maintained, i.e. spellcheck is currently not supported by Search API / SOLR?

I don't know whether the Spellcheck module is currently maintained, but as far as I know it's still working fine with the latest version of Search API and Search API Solr. You just can't use spellcheck.collate.
