Is this module still appropriate for D8 and do you need any help getting a port started?

Yes this module is going to be ported to D8. I have already started this and I have ported most of the the admin section and I am now working on the node pages sections.

Since there is a lot of changes to the D7 branch ATM I am holding these locally so I can more cleanly pull in the D7 changes.

Given there hasn't been any progress in a few years it might be worth using eg. Permissions By Term instead and manually recreating the assignments.

I have now release 8.x-3.x-alpha1.

All the basic functionality has been completed but I have not converted the actions or the views integration which I am going to be working on next.
