I want to use this module to replace the default term view with a search api based view, with facets.
When I create the new view, have I to create a "page" display?

Yes, the suggested approach is to clone the default term view (which has a page display). From here you can change the output (row/style) and other View options. Then, for your vocab or term(s), set up the TVI options for them and choose the View in the list of options.
