The database update.php doesn't work anymore. Review updates says four modules need updated (backup_migrate, chatblock, media_youtube and webform) but when I click Apply pending updates there will be menu still and title Updating but otherwise white screen and nothing happens anymore. Should I wait hours or how to proceed?
When I try again the anything hasn't change and I can repeat this many times. The database size is something 4 MB.

Look for error messages in
Look for error messages in Drupal' Recent Log Messages and in Apache error log.
Apart from that, it is puzzling. You could try installing drush on the server and runnning the updates that way (issue command 'drush dbup') and see whether it outputs some explanatory message.
It sometimes happens that the updates have already succeeded and the status report is wrong. In this case the attempt to run the updates again fails. Truncating the cache_update table in the database often fixes that problem.

Solved
Thanks John_B !
I was able to solve this question before your great tips, but I'll write them up for next time!
This issue was like a nightmare. So many hours to understand it was a problem of web browser.
When you have checked php memory limit, logged as admin with update permissions, changed settings.php free access true, emptied cache, put modules off, read all message boards... and again after Review updates -page you continue there will be a white Run update screen (only with menu)... Just before doing of all this try Firefox or other browsers. There may be something wrong with Safari 7.0.1 browser. I don't know what but update.php worked with Firefox!
Sorry I remember now hearing
Sorry I remember now hearing about this problem before, but I had forgotten.
It is like that for everyone. Those wasted (thousands of) hours are part of earning the skills. but once you have the skills you can charge clients well for your time. Although I do not think it ever stops, it is just that the more we learn, the more advanced are the problems which catch us out.

That's life
Yeah, sounds just as familiar! It makes me feel better to know we're a huge group working with these issues around and helping each others. I wonder if there one day a Google version which would organize all questions and answers...nop..we need still a human being and that's the fun :-)
