We have been told by a couple of Drupal developers that once Drupal 8 is live, versions of Drupal 6x will not longer be supported? We are most concerned about security udpates and platform stability and understand the clients would not have access to new features. But we cannot recommend to our clients to stay in Drupal (only a few non-profits we support who cannot afford to upgrade apply) if there is a high danger if security breaches and instability.
Can someone please clarify this for us?

Traditionally, Drupal only supports the current version, and previous version. This meant that support for Drupal 4.x was dropped when Drupal 6 was released, and support for Drupal 5.x was dropped when Drupal 7 was released. Therefore it's likely that support for Drupal 6 will be dropped when Drupal 8 is released. I have not seen absolute confirmation of this yet, but it's likely the case. Therefore users will be encouraged to update their sites to Drupal 7. This of course means some users will choose to migrate to other platforms.
