I followed the steps here https://drupal.org/node/22271 and enabled user pictures in the theme, but they are not showing.

I cannot reproduce with the latest dev (used http://simplytest.me). First arrow is the poster's image, second is the comment... granted they're not "pretty" but they do show up: https://www.monosnap.com/image/tJteuVVOTmlpma26nAUmHSn1FQneOW.png
