March 4, 2014 – Portland, OR – Today the Drupal Association, the nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the Drupal open source project flourish, announced that Drupal is now used to run more than one million websites around the world. As of February 15, 2014 the number of sites using Drupal is 1,005,489 according to the automated tool on Drupal.org which tallies most of the live Drupal sites on the web.

“Drupal is now one of the most popular content management systems in the world,” said Holly Ross, Executive Director of the Drupal Association. “It’s well known that Drupal powers some of the web’s largest sites, but every day we hear stories from all over the world about how Drupal is changing individual lives for the better. The vast, global mix of contributors and users makes Drupal unique.”

One reason Drupal has become so popular is its modularity, which allows users to implement as many or as few features as they want. Drupal is also known for its:

  • Thriving community: Drupal.org, the community home for the project, has more than 1 million user profiles. People all over the world contribute to the project.
  • Endless extensibility: Thousands of freely available modules allow users to build sites with little or no programming skills.
  • Enormous scalability: Some of the world’s highest-trafficked sites run on Drupal, including the New York Stock Exchange, Examiner.com and 71 of the top 100 universities in the world.

The next version of Drupal is currently being built and is expected to release later this year. That version, called Drupal 8, will include more than 200 improvements designed to create significant new capabilities and new efficiencies for developers, site builders, content administrators, marketers and IT professionals.
