It would be really nice to support Datepicker for Bootstrap as a date widget. Maybe this should be in a separate module?
It could also include functionality similar to calendar_tooltips using a popover.

Yes. I've actually already implemented http://eternicode.github.io/bootstrap-datepicker on a site recently. I had plans to eventually do this. It's currently on the bottom of the the proverbial "@todo list" though.

There is already a module providing Libraries API support for plugin mentioned in #3 at https://www.drupal.org/project/bdtpicker. The next step should be integration with Date module.

https://www.drupal.org/project/bdtpicker
has a date module integration. Just set as form widget "text field". In Field UI > field settings appears an additional configuration fieldset. just enable bdtpicker and it works.
