Chandeep Khosa, of Imagine Creativity had met with Viv of Silk Road Boutique while delivering a training seminar on pitfalls to avoid when hiring a web developer in 2009. In 2011 she got in contact and asked if her e-commerce website selling silk clothing could be built by him. After a few months of discussions the decision to go forward with Drupal was made, with the site being launched in early 2012.

Why Drupal was chosen: 

Open source was important and the client was happy to rely on Chandeep's recommendation. The client's husband was an IT Analyst and upon reviewing the case presented also agreed. Other options that were considered were a bespoke solution or Magento, but they were thrown out mainly due to recommendation and cost.

Timelines

As there was not an existing website to be replaced this made things a lot easier. We used an Agile approach with regular reviews with client's technical contact with bi-weekly phonecalls and regular emails. The project kicked off in January 2012 and was launched in April, with some amendments made in May and June. The project team of 3 was very small and consequently with regular communication we were able to collaborate relatively quickly to get the project launched.

Requirements

To have a professional look on par with many rivals who were much more established and bigger on a budget.
To bring in organic search traffic as marketing budgets were low.

Outcome

Sales grew steadily post launch and the client was able to recover their costs quickly.

Why these modules/theme/distribution were chosen: 

The client led the choice of payment processor. Drupal Commerce was selected as the lead Developer (Chandeep) had recommended it.
Gallery formatter allowed a good quality image gallery to built in a short deadline.
Views & Views slideshow allowed us to present information in a standard Drupal way, easy to modify through the admin UI.
Dropdowns use Superfish
The theme uses Adaptive Themes base theme & Sky sub-theme as at the time of the site launch it was the easier to manipulate through the UI for the client to change colours, while still offering a good responsive layout. Also as it had support for Superfish to allow dropdowns with relative ease.
MailChimp newsletter subscription was chosen due to it's simple user interface.
