what exactly, or which file is it that triggers the install page? how can i avoid this.

If it can't find database info in /sites/default/settings.php (or it fails to find /sites/default/settings.php which will happen in a new install) the system will assume it needs to do a new install. Don't replace /sites or at least copy back your settings.php :)
