Create demo module which will take care of installing the demo content - but also remove it again when disabling the module. That would make it much easier to see what it will look like, but also just remove the demo content when not needed anymore?

All demo content is created using Migrate, so you can just rollback the migrations to kill the demo content.
However, you can't kill the demo content types & product types, fields, stuff that is in Features. That's the hard part.

Abstraction of the demo would be great, however things are so set in place that I feel it'd cause more headaches than its worth (especially in retrospect to Features 2.x switch.)
