Hi there,
I wonder if it would be possible to split the main drupal database into two. I would want to have separate databases for content and settings/configuration.
Then obviously new content would have to be written to the correct database. Maybe there is already a module to achieve this, that I couldn't find. Any suggestions much appreciated,

Nope. And what up you describe is the config management initiative for d8 which took many expert drupal devs years to do and still isn't quite done yet.
