I wonder whether you already have ideas how to make this handler more scalable?
Should it use some other widget, if possible?

I didn't think about this a lot, but I guess we should try to use an autocomplete or something like that if the number of items is too high. Maybe we could implement a new form element that automatically switches from (multi)select to autocomplete depending on the number of options available...
