The above has been merged into https://github.com/Gizra/message_notify in an 8.x-1.x branch. It relies on some open PRs against the Message module too.

Awesome, great work, I'll be looking at this soon for Message UI upgrade, specifically Message UI Notify submodule. I wonder will this be better suited to a Plugin to Message UI in D8 rather than a sub module.

Well, there is also: https://www.drupal.org/project/notify_entity

I guess Message Notify is part of the Message stack and a straight port of a relatively low complexity module is easier for the time being than something else replacing it. I presume that is the rationale here and it looks to be ported already, so...

I had a chat with dpi about this re: Courier. He mentioned providing some Courier plugins for message notify and I guess that can start, now that this has been ported by jheadstrom :)
