I'd like to create a weblinks directory smilar to the one that's running here http://cms.coolsphere.org/component/option,com_weblinks/Itemid,4/ (yes, that is a Mambo site).
I've installed the weblinks module in Drupal 4.6.2, but I can't seem to find an index page similar to the one in the website above even after creating several links.
What do I need to do to enable an index page for links (sorted by categories)?
Thanks in advance for all helpful replies.

Sorry syaman but I cannot offer any answers. Though I'd just like to second your post and find a simple option for making a weblink directory, possibly also with thumbnail support too.
Please post here if you work something out.
All the best

weblinks module with article module
Or try the directory module from CVS.

interesting
I had not thought to try the article module for this, but that would probably work. I just played with the Article module for hte first time the other night out of curiousity.
I will say that the directory module from cvs works just fine on 4.6 Drupal.

directory module is not there
Sepeck the directory module you speak of seems to have been removed from CVS, or if not then I am looking in the wrong place. Barring that, I could just be a raving loon! :)

loon :) or just an obscure location
Actually, it doesn't seem to be packaging as expected. You can get it here...

Thanks all
Thanks for the replies folks. I tried the Directory module in CVS but it seems to insist on doing directories for other nodes in my Drupal installation too for some reason. Tried Articles module and it works very nicely, so am sticking with it. :)
why not extend directory module

don't I wish
after a day wasted learning an etire new theme scheema/language just to format it in the theme I have chosen... I discover it can't be done... steaming pile-o.... I was not impressed.
bingo!
Exactly what I was searching for!
Thanks for the obscure link :)
I have tried many
I have tried many approaches. Unfortunately directory seems to be an "orphaned" module.
Wit a little tweaking, the article module has worked for http://www.researchzilla.com/article
Hope this helps.
commit times
Orphaned? The last commit was two days ago. It's just still in development.
As with anything, you can finish it yourself if you need, otherwise you can continue to use the article modules as that works for you so is probably the better aproach.

but articles is a nice approach...
honestly, dmclark is the technical guy who worked with me to repurpose articles to support weblinks - directory is not the only option (for all those interested in alternate interfaces) - in fact, we toyed with nodelist, sitemap, sitemenu etc...they all work fine with weblinks and present interesting choices for site creators...
in fact, other modules give great control over which elements and items (terms) within a vocabulary might be included, and include some useful default features (like node count and so on, or shortcut links to rss feeds for weblink categories)...
that's what's so great about drupal in general, ALL of the modules can be repurposed...technical prowess is one thing (and it's required), but elegance of imagination is what makes a lot of sites so interesting to review...
at any rate, thanks for the total weblink overhaul, the module is outstanding and perfect for what i'm up to as the editor in chief at researchzilla (www.researchzilla.com)
the indexpage module
the indexpage.module will also allowed you pluck out a dir structure... but it might be more detail than what you need and I'm also rather sure, its not what you are use to looking at for a weblink dir, you know something like "Links" by GT
but it does generate this for adding it to a pri or sec link
/indexpage/weblink
I don't have tax dhtml loaded, but it might as well offer you soemthing
Directory using weblink + article
Hello,
I´m testing creatin one link directory using this 2 modules. The only problem I found is that links appear sorted by date added at each article page. Can it be done to sort the weblinks in alphabetical order?
Ty, Simon.
directory is...
...sorting alphabetical already.
Simplest Out-of-the-Box Solution = Article Module + Flexinode
I spent several days playing around with the various directory options listed in this thread and found that the easiest, straight out of the box, is to simply use the article module associated with a flexi-node type (I called it "directory listing"). I tried using the directory module, but because of some flaws in its negative inclusion policy, certain content was forced into the directory with no easy way to exclud it.
Anyway, you can see the beginnings of the directory hereL
http://csinvestor.com/directory/
(For my own sanity, I simply renamed the article module "directory" and changed all the functions and URLs inside the module. This allowed for the URL path to read "directory" instead of "article").
Blocked Directory Nav Menu
One nice feature about Drupal is that the vocabulary that you set up for your directory can easily be used to set up a blocked navigation menu that points back to your top-level directory categories. Here's an example (right column):
http://csinvestor.com/directory/banking
clean
That came out nice and clean.
I wonder if SimpleVote.mod will work with this
but...
What I don't like about directory.module, is that nodes are not sorted alphabetically. In your example, go to the Education section.
If your website is very dynamic and your need sorted nodes, I recommand the views.module. You'll just have to create a menu block for your sections.

View Module - amazing!
Wow, that is a cool module, very flexible, and idiot proof. Thanks!

I need such module for v. 4.7
Is anybody could help me ?
List of weblinks
A simple patch for adding a weblink list to weblink module 4.6 is here: http://drupal.org/node/75102
if you do something modify
if you do something modify the LinksDB module
http://drupal.org/project/linksdb
Its a good starting point
LinksDB is the answer
Its really good, it needs a few more features but I recently made a bunch of feature requests and the devs have added them
LinksDB
http://drupal.org/project/linksdb
I think this is the one to watch. I'm going to go install the newest version and give them some more feedback. Its already shown enough promise that I'm just going to use it live. Ratings and Comments are postponed for a future release. :)
I think we all should help out on just 1 module and make it great rather than messing with 5/6 seperate ones.
(sorry about the dupe post, i didnt realize i had posted here already) :o
Best solution?
Can you tell me what is the best solution you found?
Thanks.
