The move was successful and we are now running on the new hardware!
The database is now running on the Sun Fire V20z server donated by Sun Microsystems. The web frontend is powered by one Dell 1850, the plan is to add a second one to load balance. Currently we are waiting for the second server to be delivered, and there are still some issues caused by having more than one server that need to be planned out in more detail.
The mail and cvs are still being hosted on the old hardware, again waiting for the new hardware still to move these to their own dedicated machine. Once the rest of the hardware is up and running we will start working on moving the rest over.
Update by Dries: Scott Kveton from the Open Source Lab at Oregon State University has additional details.
Tomorrow, Friday, august 26, 2005 the drupal.org website will be moved to the new hardware at OSL. The switch will start around 1300 CET. There will be some downtime as the latest data is copied over to the new servers and while the new DNS information propagates.
Comments
ttl
Ask the current provider to put the TTL on a low value like we did with the outage switch, so propagation can be done in minutes instead of hours.
Good luck, looks like a nice but though job. Multiple timezones so someone from OPS is bound to get up early or stay up late :-)

Its already seeming
Its already seeming noticably faster for me. Surely the switch hasn't taken place yet... ?
performance
depends on a lot of things. Users connected, bots crawling, mail list activity, how many modules have been updated and need to be repackaged...

Quantitative differences with separate DB server
Any quantitative info about how much faster Drupal is with a separate database server? (I know it "feels" much, much faster)
I'm contemplating moving all my databases to a different machine as well...

Here's the original link where the details of hosting are discussed. Free power, bandwidth and rack space. We have to provide our own servers. A very nice deal.

Drupal Best Practices Guide
holy lack of lag batman!
wow, what a diff.
excellent work. well worth it.
i second two of the motions mentioned above:
1) any chance of getting a summary of the before/after here? i think a lot of us would be very interesting in knowing more about the 'old setup', the type of load it was dealing with, the 'new setup', and how that same load is now handled/distributed. if such an article already exists, i haven't seen it, sorry.
2) method of ensuring that drupal.org has the financial resources to maintain sufficient resources and upgrade when necessary. donations button is always good. maybe a 'financials' page that summarizes (not necessarily revealing dollar amounts) reserve funds, anticipated needs for one-time expenses... maybe when funds are low, there could be some sort of fund raiser...
just thoughts &^)
