As my wish of teaming Mailhandler with Node Privacy by Role has been rejected by Z.Stolar (Mailhandler), I'm going to try it with here. Would you please take a look at my feature request at Mailhandler and his answer: #315255: Access control using roles

NPBR 5.x (not 6.x yet) supports actions so in theory, you'd be able to create an action to set permissions on a node on creation using actions. NPBR would also let you set default access permissions by content type.
For this issue to make any progress here, someone would need to be writing a patch cause I have no need for setting permissions on automatically generated nodes right now.
Have you checked out Organic Groups? Addressing content to a specific audience is better handled by that than NPBR.
