Meeting will happen in #contribution-events on drupal.slack.com.

Hello and welcome to this asynchronous, biweekly Slack meeting for the Contribution Events Initiative!

This meeting:
➤ Is for Drupal community members interested in how to better organize, promote, and improve contribution events. We discuss upcoming events, lessons learned from past events, ideas for increasing event participation, how to improve documentation, and more.
➤ Happens every two weeks in alternating timezones: 5pm UTC Mondays and 5am UTC Tuesdays.
➤ Is done over chat.
➤ Is actively facilitated for 1 hour, but is open asynchronously for 24 hours from the meeting start time.
➤ Happens in threads, which you can follow to be notified of new replies even if you don’t comment in the thread. You may also join the meeting later and participate asynchronously!
➤ Transcript will be exported and posted to a project issue for this meeting. For anonymous comments, start with a :bust_in_silhouette: emoji. To take a comment or thread off the record, start with a :no_entry_sign: emoji.

This meeting is run alternately by @Kristen Pol (she/her) and @surabhi.gokte. This week I am facilitating.

:zero: Who is here today? Comment in the thread to introduce yourself and let us know [insert social question, e.g. if you have any interesting plans for the weekend, what is a recent book/movie/series you enjoyed, what is a new song you like, have any fun vacation plans].
:one: Do you have suggested topics you are looking to discuss? Post in this thread and we’ll open separate threads for them as appropriate. Please use the additional threads for discussion.
:two: Space to call out any recent contribution wins and special Drupal thanks for people in contribution land.
:three: Are there any contribution events coming up that you know about? Regular events?
:four: Did you participate in a contribution event recently? Feedback?
:five: Are you looking for a contribution event to help as an organizer, mentor, or participant? Or are you an event organizer that doesn't have contribution activities yet and would like help?
:six: Do you have any resources or documentation suggestions? Do you have suggestions for where to look for existing documentation (even outside of Drupal)?

[add additional topic threads here]

:last: That's all folks, thank you for attending! :blue_heart: This meeting is officially open for the next 23 hours, so please continue the conversation in the threads above. We also welcome feedback on the meeting structure and agenda via this thread, Slack, or issue queue!
  • For #1, don't copy/paste the topics exactly unless they are clear and short enough. Otherwise, summarize the information so it's easy to understand. Then start each of those topic threads with the first item acknowledging the person who suggested the topic, e.g. [@ name] raised this. Or you can put in the thread message if preferred.

  • For #3, add this for first item in the thread:

In addition to adding events here, use this issue to add new events and encourage organizers to add these to the Community Events list as well: https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3281974

  • For #4, add this for first item in the thread:

In addition to adding feedback here, use this issue or create a child issue to add any contribution event feedback:
    https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3282885

  • For #5, add this for first item in the thread:

In addition to adding your interest here, use this page to signify your willingness to help at contribution events: https://www.drupal.org/community-initiatives/contribution-events-initiat...

  • For #6, add these for first items in the thread:

In addition to adding your resources here, use this issue to note any resources and documentation that might be helpful for contribution events or places we could look (even outside of Drupal): https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3280005

  • After #6, review the open project issues to see if there are any topics that should be added for this particular meeting and open numbered threads as appropriate.

Kristen Pol (she/her) Contribution at DrupalCon
kimb0 DrupalSouth sprint day coming up Friday Oct 21. https://www.previousnext.com.au/blog/join-us-person-drupalsouth-2022-cod... Been doing the same thing for about 5-6 years. Would be great to have some tips on how we could possibly improve how it runs on the day

2️⃣ Space to call out any recent contribution wins and special Drupal thanks for people in contribution land.

Kristen Pol (she/her) Shout out to @gusaus who keeps bringing up important topics that haven't been resolved so we make sure to address 🙂
Kristen Pol (she/her) Shout out to the DrupalCon Prague mentors
VinmayiSwamy Kudos to @surabhi.gokte for achieving the 'Women in Drupal Award' :bouquet:
Tinto Cross-posting from the Bug Smash meeting: @shadcn for his work on Next.js for Drupal and @mherchel for his work on everything Drupal frontend.
shadcn Thank you @Tinto :raised_hands:

3️⃣ Are there any contribution events coming up that you know about? Regular events?

Kristen Pol (she/her) In addition to adding events here, use this issue to add new events and encourage organizers to add these to the Community Events list as well: https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3281974 (edited)
Kristen Pol (she/her) BADCamp has 2 contribution days (first day focused on Drupal 10 readiness, in particular, the Feeds module, and the second day focused on Backdrop)
Kristen Pol (she/her) DrupalSouth has a contribution day
spleshka (he/him) on the upcoming Monday my team will be deciding on the topic for the next contrib Friday, so maybe we will be up for another D10 porting day or something new 🙂 Stay tuned!
Tinto I missed the last two D10 Porting Days so I’m blocking my calender for the next one.

4️⃣ Did you participate in a contribution event recently? Feedback?

Kristen Pol (she/her) In addition to adding feedback here, use this issue or create a child issue to add any contribution event feedback:#3282885: META: 2022 Drupal contribution events feedback (edited)
Kristen Pol (she/her) I haven't but I'm curious to hear about DrupalCon contribution
leslieg It was a very productive DrupalCon from the Project Browser perspective. We had folks in the General Contribution room all week and had 15 or so helping out in the mentored contribution area on Friday. We also got great contributions in the four BoF sessions that we did.
leslieg In General, both the Mentored and General Contribution rooms were busy on Friday. There were quite a few folks in the 1st time contrib workshop on Friday amd I know there were sessions held during the week as well.

5️⃣ Are you looking for a contribution event to help as an organizer, mentor, or participant? Or are you an event organizer that doesn't have contribution activities yet and would like help?

Kristen Pol (she/her) In addition to adding your interest here, use this page to signify your willingness to help at contribution events: https://www.drupal.org/community-initiatives/contribution-events-initiat... (edited)
Kristen Pol (she/her) Wondering if anyone wants to volunteer to lead or co-lead a Drupal 10 global porting day in October or November
VinmayiSwamy I would love to participate as a participant/mentor for Indian Standard Timezone (IST) region (edited)

6️⃣ Do you have any resources or documentation suggestions? Do you have suggestions for where to look for existing documentation (even outside of Drupal)?

Kristen Pol (she/her) In addition to adding your resources here, use this issue to note any resources and documentation that might be helpful for contribution events or places we could look (even outside of Drupal): https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3280005

7️⃣ Let's regroup/refocus on the Open Collective task

Kristen Pol (she/her) I haven't looked at the doc yet :sad-panda:
Kristen Pol (she/her) This is the document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TfD8lSSDyujTbIBNuJU4cr9ohAXsnzMn3IFB...
Kristen Pol (she/her) I added all the info from the application and started filling it it
gusaus  Maybe pick up from this point in the last meeting?
gusaus Actually... looking at the doc it seems like we have consensus around the 'Drupal contribution' part of the name. :joy:Think we can fine tune in the doc and comments.
gusaus I made a few comments and revisions to the doc. There basically are two questions we need to answer (each with a 250 character limit). Think we mainly need a clear/concise answer to the second one.
gusaus So lets come up with a couple semi-clear answers and submit before the end of the week :clapper:
Kristen Pol (she/her) It’s on my focus list for today so that’s a start :)
gusaus Wow - what a concept - not sure if I could even do that. Hence I'm unfocused.
gusaus That said, I think we can decouple the application from the larger plan to sustain and cross that one off the list.
gusaus We really just need a sentence or two - having been through the process myself, I'm pretty sure it'll get approved without any issues.Once that happens, it'll be a motivator to clarify the goals and needs since we'll need something compelling to go on the collective.
gusaus Once we have a collective (which could essentially function like an agency that can not only pay contributors but hire employees) there will be all sorts of contribution and collaboration possibilities with other projects/groups using Open Collective. Maybe even ones like this 📣https://twitter.com/gusaus/status/1575626018622435328
Kristen Pol (she/her) You should seen my "short list" (~70 items) and my "long lists" (multiple pages) I've started the sticky note thing only in the last few weeks where I go through my "short list" and pull what I hope to finish that day. It's been working pretty well. That said, I already got distracted a couple times today on stuff I wasn't planning on spending time on 🙂 (edited)
gusaus ...yes like talking to me instead of crossing the OC app off the list :joy:  I'm not exactly a clear/concise writer or thinker (as you already know), so I can't help beyond the comments/revisions on the doc. I can help get it approved if there are any issues - then help at least outline goals / needs and onboard contributors thereafter.
Kristen Pol (she/her) I’m going for a walk and then this will be my next item… hopefully will be done in 3 hours
Kristen Pol (she/her) I have 2 paragraphs that are 244 characters each (edited)
gusaus So is there one less item on today's focus list :grinning:
Kristen Pol (she/her) Well, I need to submit it :)
gusaus I'm on standby to help here or over on the Open Collective side of the Slacks
Kristen Pol (she/her) Let me do it now before I do other work
Kristen Pol (she/her) Submitted!
Kristen Pol (she/her) @gusaus You may have received an email
Kristen Pol (she/her) https://opencollective.com/drupal-contribution
Kristen Pol (she/her) If I knew the text was going to show up here, I would have probably reworded to be more public-facing but that can be done later
Kristen Pol (she/her) hmm... maybe I already made an account... I see a 1 after my profile link https://opencollective.com/kristen-pol1
Kristen Pol (she/her) I may want to switch that at some point and swap it with the original
gusaus 📣 I got the email and accepted!
Kristen Pol (she/her) yep: https://opencollective.com/kristen-pol
Kristen Pol (she/her) hmm.. I guess I'll sort it after they approve
Kristen Pol (she/her) I guess if I would have used my regular email address it may have figured it out
gusaus Yes - everything can be modified - and you will not be responsible for doing it all! Probably should create an issue to focus on what we want to do with the collective.
Kristen Pol (she/her) Yeah, we'll need to update/close/create issues
Kristen Pol (she/her) I'm way over my contribution hours for this week though so I'll need to park it for next week
gusaus This is a major accomplishment - we can work out the details in the issue queue (and maybe the same google doc) next week.
Kristen Pol (she/her) Yeah, might as well use that doc 🙂
Kristen Pol (she/her) Thanks again for your persistence... that's the only thing that made it happen
gusaus Thank you for taking to initiative to create the initiative :raised_hands: I think just knowing we have a collective will be a motivator for current and new contributors. 📣
Kristen Pol (she/her) Yeah... it will be interesting to figure out how to get donations and how to best spend the $ 🙂
gusaus We're having some parallel conversations on that topic in OC Slack - but I think this issue/comment describes a key piece we'll hopefully be able to launch if @Keegan Rankin and some of colleagues are interested in making #sustaindrupal a reality.
Kristen Pol (she/her) I haven’t looked at that slack in some time :disappointed:
gusaus We need to make it so you shouldn't have to (unless you want to). As a 'Drupal Contribution' initiative we should be able to create or modify a contributor role where one of the responsibilities will be to serve as a bridge between OC Slack and the drupal.org mothership :drupalparrot:
Kristen Pol (she/her) Sounds great :+1:
Keegan Rankin Wow awesome work! I was MIA from this thread this week, but glad to see the application submitted. Definitely motivating in regards to trying to start up a SustainDrupal collective. I'll start a document for that application as well, and then next focus on finding another admin
gusaus Hopefully we'll be able to close out this issue in the near future 📣 https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3294434
gusaus With regards to SustainDrupal... if what I'm saying in this comment makes sense, that application process would be different if Open Source Collective was the host -SustainDrupal- enabling sustainable projects (including funding and contribution tools)- hosted by Open Source Collective, 501c6 (https://opencollective.com/opensource#category-ABOUT)
gusaus @Kristen Pol (she/her) I'm a little surprised https://opencollective.com/drupal-contribution is still pending.Have you heard anything back from OCF? As admin I was assuming I'd also be in the loop but could be wrong. If we haven't heard from 'em I'll followup in their Slack channel.
Kristen Pol (she/her) Sorry, I owe them more detail. You weren’t cced? I’ve been slammed. I’ll need to make this a priority later today after errands
gusaus Ahhh... that explains it. No I wasn't cc'd. No worries - is there anything I can help with? Maybe we can just work off the google doc if you need help providing additional detail and answers. (edited)
Kristen Pol (she/her) They want more details on how the funds will be used
Kristen Pol (she/her) If you want to jot down stuff in the doc, I’ll look later when I’m home
gusaus That's weird - how do they expect us to provide all that in less than 250 characters :sweat_smile:Sure, I'll add more detail to the doc when I get a chance.
Kristen Pol (she/her) I know, it’s very odd to have such few allowed characters IMO
Kristen Pol (she/her) My “to do” lists have lists… I’m out most of today but am going to try super hard to do this tonight
Kristen Pol (she/her) I’m too tired… didn’t sleep enough last night and was in class 8 hours so… there’s always tomorrow
Kristen Pol (she/her) I sent them the additional info
gusaus Sorry you felt compelled to do this over the weekend - that said :raised_hands: :thankful:
Kristen Pol (she/her) every day is Monday in my house :stuck_out_tongue:

8️⃣ Organizing the next Drupal 10 global porting day

Kristen Pol (she/her) Any thoughts on timing in October and/or November?
Kristen Pol (she/her) Anyone want to lead/co-lead?
Kristen Pol (she/her) Anything we can improve upon from the last event documentation or process wise?
FeyP Anything we can improve upon from the last event documentation or process wise? You're probably already aware of it and maybe it has even been addressed already, but there was some feedback posted in the D10 readiness meeting on August 30:https://drupal.slack.com/archives/C014CT1CN1M/p1661853958927359?thread_t...
FeyP Any thoughts on timingPersonally, I think this could even be multiple days, if we can find enough mentors willing to help, and preferably one of the days would be on a weekend. If I wanted to participate (in whatever capacity) I usually can't during work days.
FeyP Something else I'm interested in is what would be the requirements to be a mentor? I probably have the required knowledge w/r/t porting modules and also have some mentoring experience, because mentoring people is an important part of my job, but I'm not sure if there are any requirements specific to mentoring for Drupal events like this. I looked at the resources linked from the channel, but I didn't find any documentation on this.
kalabro we had mentor requirements straight in the event description: https://www.drupal.org/community/events/drupal-10-global-porting-day-aug... again highlights lack of documentation structure
FeyP Thanks! Yeah, I thought that it was probably there somewhere and I just didn't find it. I expected this to be some kind of general documentation not tied to a specific event, so I didn't look in the old event description. But reading it, it makes sense that it is there, because it probably depends a bit on the specific event. I think I meet these requirements, I'll apply for the next event, if I have time.
Kristen Pol (she/her) Awesome feedback… I should get these captured in an issue so they don’t get lost
Kristen Pol (she/her) I'm collecting this here: https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3312182

9️⃣ Highlights of contribution at DrupalCon

Kristen Pol (she/her) I didn't attend but maybe some people who mentored can chime in
gregg_marshall Nice to see the rooms actually fill up (more/less).  We could have used some additional mentors.  The times I led people to the general contribution room it looked busy as well.
AmyJune (volkswagenchick) Yes, more mentors would have been good. But overall we had a nice mix of devs and no-code contributors. It was nice to have project browser issue Las to work on.I do wish more mentors who didn't attend in person could have participated in issue triage.
Chris Darke As always we are still ironing out kinks and often times there are some technical issues that are not always so apparent during ‘light testing’, but it was great to see some of the newer mentors taking a very active role and pitching in big time! I do think we need to get a better linear view of the different sessions and also the physical layout for what we need. We had a 1TW taking place before any Mentoring Orientation, and on the Mentored Contribution day the mentored contribution space was planned to be with general contribution and big posters were printed that reflected that.. so some more time being a bit more careful about what happens when and where.
fgm Remote contrib allowed me to finish the MongoDB new Queue API implementation, which is awaiting RTBC to publish a new D10-compatible stable release

🔟 That's all folks, thank you for attending! 💙 This meeting is officially open for the next 23 hours, so please continue the conversation in the threads above. We also welcome feedback on the meeting structure and agenda via this thread, Slack, or issue queue!

1️⃣ 1️⃣ From @kimb0 DrupalSouth sprint day coming up Friday Oct 21. Would be great to have some tips on how we could possibly improve how it runs on the day. (edited)

Kristen Pol (she/her) Adding this as I missed it before
Kristen Pol (she/her) https://drupal.slack.com/archives/C03FH8GTB1A/p1664262300212449?thread_t...
Kristen Pol (she/her) I would suggest tapping into some of the feedback from the DrupalCon Prague mentors as it's fresh in their minds and that was in-person
Kristen Pol (she/her) https://drupal.slack.com/archives/C03FH8GTB1A/p1664255606682859
Kristen Pol (she/her) Sounds like having ample mentors and making sure the mentors have been prepped/trained is one thing
Kristen Pol (she/her) Depending on what you are focused on, having documentation to refer to can be helpful for both mentors and contributors... we do have some D10 porting docs though there should be some improvements to that based on feedback
Kristen Pol (she/her) https://drupal.slack.com/archives/C03FH8GTB1A/p1664315338323749?thread_t...
Kristen Pol (she/her) If it's bugsmash stuff then I'm not sure we have any event-related documentation for that but at least the initiative docs are pretty good as you know
Kristen Pol (she/her) I don't know if people are masking/distancing but, if they are, then doing screensharing from computer even if in-person was something that was suggested for DrupalCon (edited)
Kristen Pol (she/her) I don't know if there are plans for any "new mentor workshop" type thing... you may not have the numbers/interest for that... if you have enough mentors to help one-on-one with onboarding then it's probably not needed
Kristen Pol (she/her) having shirts for mentors is helpful... usually the DrupalCon mentor shirts are an obvious color (yellow/red/bright green/etc) so that it's easy to find mentors (edited)
Kristen Pol (she/her) just rattling things off... you may already know/do these things
Kristen Pol (she/her) side note, the mentor dinners were always a highlight for me if that may be something of interest to your group
kimb0 thanks @Kristen Pol (she/her)!
irinaz @kimb0 One thing that is becoming more common is participation from folks all over the world, and what  helpful there is "showing your timezone" on events feature. I would like to try to join sprint, but I am always having trouble figuring out times/dates all over the world 🙂 (edited)
Kristen Pol (she/her) The world buddy thing has been helpful for me
Kristen Pol (she/her) But I work in Eastern Australian time zone for work so I’ve gotten used to that conversion… though the 2 daylight savings time changes are shifting things… 1 hour so far and another hour in November when the US does theirs
