I have searched the forums and the user guide up and down but to no avail...

Besides first visiting the page in another window, copy the URL, come back to the page I'm editing, then wrap the word with <a> tag and the URL I just copied, or is there a better way to link selected word to a local page?

Just a gentle nudge

...you can start using URL aliases with values that have some logic in them (i.e. they follow the site structure and end up with the title of the page, using "-" as separator for the words).

This way I manage to link (still using <a>...</a>) without visiting the page, as the site's structure is in my head. Besides, I prefer coding the links myself, as I can add target screens, titles, et cetera.

Using URL aliases helps you being found by search engines too!

UPDATE:

Just realize that using URL aliases can be tricky, namely, in case you decide to change URL aliases one day... The links then won't work anymore.

This is a failing of the edit interface as it stands.
( if someone can point out a fix to this question I'd be happy to be corrected. )

I'm happy enough to have 7 browser windows open on a multi-screen workstation, code all links by hand (can't stand wysiwyg) and whip into the content admin menu all the time to find my nodes, but I'm a freak.

It just happened to be the very first question the client asked me in an early demo -

Look! You don't have to do any HTML, you can just click the 'link' button, and ... ... um. Damn.
Hang on a minute. OK, lets see, first press Control and N.
No, both at the same time.
Either one, it doesn't matter.
No, it's OK, your other window is still there, we are just going to go find ...
... yes, it would be good to have a list, wouldn't it?
