With this module you can set a list as 'required' and automatically add a user to your Mailchimp list when he registers on your Drupal site. You can do this without asking the user's permission or sending an opt-in email.

Question: Is this okay with Mailchimp, advisable, any experience from users of this module already doing this?

Thank you to the developer for this module. I tested it with a free Mailchimp account and it is has good flexibility of how to add users to the Mailchimp list (opt-in/opt-out/required) and sends user data from Drupal to your Mailchimp list. I am considering to use a 'required' list to automatically add users as they sign up and then use that Mailchimp list for site user communication (such as 'you haven't visted for a while...', 'check out the new site design', 'subcribe to this forum...').

I can't find documentation about the Mailchimp module (please tell me if there is any) so I would like to understand the intent for the 'required' sign-up made possible with this module as I describe above and make sure I don't go against Mailchimp policy and before changing my email marketing service (currently using Aweber). Thanks for any insights.

It is not against any policy that I am aware of. But I think falls under the category of what the terms of conditions are for becoming a member of your site. When a user registers, they provide an email and might receive notifications about new posts, membership announcements, new features, etc. You must, of course, provide a way to unsubscribe, and you need to message this appropriately as users can do so either by canceling their membership or just being removed from the MC list, based on your business rules.

Thanks for your answer. I asked the question to Mailchimp directly, during one of the webinars. Mailchimp answer: being registered for a site ,in this case signing up for an account on my Drupal site, means you will have an existing business relation with the user and Mailchimp is okay adding the users email address to a Mailchimp list.

I am planning to add users in this way to a required list for site updates and promotions and to have a separate opt-in list for a weekly newsletter.

I found out though that when you add the same email address to multiple lists in Mailchimp, this will count as multiple subscribers when Mailchimp calculates your monthly fee based on total subscriber numbers.
