Child link are not showing up and even when i have the primary menu expanded they still don't show up?

I guess you meant dropdown menus, right?

If so, the theme itself doesn't support this feature (and most drupal themes don't, too). But Nice Menus may fulfill you need. I haven't try it myself but it should work with primary menu (http://drupal.org/node/240831).

I Think the OP is refering to menu's set as expanded. They remain collapsed

Nice menus doesn't look the same. How difficult would it be to support dropdown menus?
