Uwe Hermann has written a comprehensive article in the current issue of PHP Solutions, German edition Ausgabe 1 2006 (13). Uwe walks his readers through installing Drupal, and considers topics like multisite setups from the very beginning. He pays careful attention to describing how one would create a portal site (music portal in his article), where the site would be accessed using different subdomains, such as rock.example.com, blues.example.com and classical.example.com. This includes using database prefixing, and Uwe provides assistance on using the database prefixing scripts which ship with Drupal.

After laying the groundwork for a multi-domain portal, Uwe takes us through configuring Drupal, concepts like themes, modules, user privileges and roles, and creating content.

As the article covers the Drupal 4.7 branch, care is taken to point out some of the cool features like auto-completion on the "Authored by" field. Uwe knows how to present Drupal's strengths.

More than a whole page is spent explaining how to write international sites in Drupal, covering both the use of the locale.module and the i18n.module.

WYSIWYG editing is covered (the portal chooses FCKeditor). Categories and tagging are demonstrated.

The final section covers a multi-pronged approach to search engine optimisation, starting with Drupal's built-in path.module, then discussing pathauto, google sitemaps and the node keywords modules.

Good job Uwe! This is a great article, and in combination with Hagen Graf's upcoming book, I expect the number of German-speaking Drupal users to skyrocket in the coming months.

Anybody has copy or link to this article? It seems like the solution for exactly my problem.

It looks like they publish an online edition when the next print edition comes out. Do you read German? Don't forget, it's in German. Everything that Uwe covers is also covered pretty well here, on Drupal.org, as well as in the book that I wrote (see link in my sig). You can probably order a print copy of the magazine on the site I linked to above, as well.

As far as I can see they translate all articles into German, French, Italian, Polish and Spanish. Funny enough, I wrote the article in English and they translated it into German (although I'm a native German speaker ;-).

Anyways, the article is not available online AFAIK, but probably will be when the next issue is out (not sure though).

I'm sure if I wrote something in German and someone else translated it into English it would sound like some of the cab drivers in Detroit. Good to know that this will reach such a wide audience.

Is there any chance of getting the original English version of your article at some stage in the future?

The link http://www.robshouse.net/drupal-book is showing an error today Jan 10, 2006.

Fatal error: Got error 28 from table handler query: SELECT DISTINCT(p.perm) FROM role r INNER JOIN permission p ON p.rid = r.rid INNER JOIN users_roles ur ON ur.rid = r.rid WHERE ur.uid = 0 in /home/httpd/vhosts/default/htdocs/civicspace-0.8.1.3/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 66

where else is this drupal book available? Does it mention PHP5+MySQL4.1 on Linux 2.6.10?

I had stupidly let my /tmp directory fill up with database backups and MySQL had no place to write temporary files to the hard drive. I guess even this is worth something (besides the great joy that I experienced seeing my site down ;-) --- any time you see the Got error 28 message from MySQL , you know you've got to clean up some hard drive space.

I don't talk about PHP5 and I don't go into anything specific about MySQL 4.1 other than to say that you have to use the mysqli database connection protocol in settings.php. There's nothing specific about Linux 2.6 that needs to be said, afaik. All the command line instructions I provide should apply to any version of Linux that you're likely to use.

"I expect the number of German-speaking Drupal users to skyrocket in the coming months." Indeed. The effect of a printed magazine is still far better and more lasting than say a mentioning on /.

As of this writing, there are 47 pages of Germans. My quess, within two month there will be 60.

/me is a bit rusty on german, but:

Wow! I'm on vacation for a few days and the first thing I read when I come back is a review of my article of which I didn't even know that it has already been published ;-) Thanks for the great review Robert!

Oh, and thanks a lot Dries for reviewing an early draft of my article and pointing out a some flaws and bugs!

I bought the french version of the magazine. Uwe's article is awsome, very well-written and I learnt a lot of things about Drupal multi-site configuration.

This kind of magazine dedicated to PHP is rare, so I think everybody could buy PHP Solutions magazine, it's worth its price and it's in our interest to support this kind of publication.

They could give free issues for Drupal developers :)

Uwe, is there a way to get (buy) the English version of the article ?

Or an electronic version of the French version ? (looked for it in Brussels, but couldn't find it)

Uwe Hermann’s picture

I don't know if they sell an English version, but the French version should be available online (after the next issue is published at the latest)...

On the magazine they say that PHP Solutions is published in 4 versions:
french, german, polish and italian. The magazine is sold every 2 months and the next issue is scheduled for march.
