It would be great to have an option to use the system's default cover image as the gallery's cover image right on the Edit Images page, or at least on the Gallery Edit page. This would be useful for galleries that the user has chosen to remain hidden (see http://drupal.org/node/480304).
In fact, I don't see any place to specify the use of the default gallery image. It only seems to show up if the gallery has no images in it at all.

dddave CreditAttribution: dddave commentedI think this can be closed because the underlying problem is solved already (private galleries are hidden - but with a bug).
On Config Edit the explanation under "default cover image" states that it should only be displayed when no image is in the gallery.
