It would be really nice if coupons worked similar to shipping quotes where they are verified and applied to the order total on the checkout screen via AJAX.

I agree, is this going to be added as a feature?

Basically add a submit button to the Coupon discount pane. It'd triggers an AJAX call that would get the discount and add it as a line item to the order total preview.
