I would like to know what is the current state of the multigroup module. After the 2 related issues (#196421: Deleting unwanted multiple values / multiple values delta issues and #119102: Combo field - group different fields into one) have been closed I don't know more about the status of this module.

I know from the issue queue that markus is going to keep the 3.x branch updated with the latest changes in the 2.x branch. Does this also mean that when a stable 3 version is going to come out we will have an update path from the 3.x one (that seems normal, but I just want to be sure)?

Also, it would be interesting to have some information about users that are using this module on live websites.

Thanks for your great work.

I am willing to donate say $100,- to get CCK 3 into a release, or at least a dev version with an upgrade path to D7. I think many are willing to chip in. The question is how to steer such an effort.

I am also willing to donate to this cause. Either money or development time in a collaborative effort.

For those who will use CCK 3.x-dev in production site, please be carefull, read this: http://drupal.org/node/690140#comment-3541778

Could this be a multigroup killer? :)

@markus_petrux:

what is new in CCK 6.x-3.x-dev on November 11, 2010 version?

http://drupal.org/project/cvs/48429 - doesn't look like much?

Excuse my newbieness if I'm posting this in the wrong place. For the life of me I can't figure out how to get content multigroups on my site. I have the latest version of cck installed and it only seems to allow me to create standard groups. Am I not enabling something? Do I have to download a separate module? Please help!

bjsomers, don't forget to navigate to admin/build/modules and make certain that the module "Content Multigroup" is turned on.

Hi Q2U2,

Thanks for the quick response. I don't have that as an option in my site building--> modules page. Is there an independent content multigroup module I have to install? If so, where can I find it? This is the best I've been able to find http://drupal.org/project/content_multigroup and it seems like this project is abandoned. There is also this abandoned patch which seems to address my issue, but its so old I figured it would be integrated into cck? http://drupal.org/project/patch_content_multigroup

Multigroup is a part of the CCK 6.x-3.x-dev branch and you need to make sure that you have the 3.x-dev branch installed to get the Multigroup feature. Read the warnings: the 3.x-dev branch is not for productiuon sites.

... and in case you're wondering where the hell cck 3.x is, know that it is not listed directly in the project's page. You have to visit the 'View all releases' link right bellow the available downloads and once there, you'll see 6.x-3.x-dev listed as a download. Give it a try and good luck with your tests ;)

PS: remember to provide feedback (be it to report success or not)

Thanks for your help guys, being so new to drupal I have no idea what to expect with dev times. Any best guesses on a stable release?

Considering the progress made since the beginning of this thread I wouldn't get my hopes high. Currently, many developers seem to be working on D7 in one way or another. I don't know about this issue here and who is actually working on it. If you are a developer you can probably see if it is worth it to dive into this or not. For testing it is always good enough, but for any serious production use I would leave my fingers off this one (unless you are a developer, as i said).

My understanding from posts on this site is that the CCK3 dev version is stable and is kept up to date with fixes to CCK2. It is further my understanding that the reason there is no official CCK3 release has more to do with a questionable upgrade path than any instabilities in the module itself. That being said, there appears to be several projects working on similar functionality in D7 and the likelihood of an upgrade path seems promising. It also seems that a great many people are in fact using it on production sites (I will soon be one of them).

@jstoller

When you say :

the reason there is no official CCK3 release has more to do with a questionable upgrade path than any instabilities in the module itself

Do you refer to an upgrade from CCK2 -> CCK3 or from CCK3 to Fields in D7 ?
Upgrade and Readme files shipped with CCK3 are not quite up-to-date about this

yched mention in an other thread ( http://drupal.org/node/690140#comment-3742750 )

FWIW, we are now pretty confident that there can be an equivalent to the "multigroup" in D7, and that an upgrade path is possible (that is, when someone writes it...).
Not locking D6 users on a short-lived solution without any possibility to move to D7 was the main reason (at least the main I'm aware of) not to roll a CCK 3.0 release.

I'm not familiar with the current status of the multigroup functionnality and the CCK 3 branch, and markus_petrux will see how he prefers to deal with that, but as far as I'm concerned, rolling a 3.0 release (possibly even just an alpha) sounds fine.

Well, stability-wise talking... a search for open *bugs* of the 3.x branch in the issue queue shows 47 issues in total (9 of them are critical and another 1 is marked as 'major'). You can make your own conclusions/assumptions on what these numbers mean, but if you want the 3.x released sooner, then help in those issues by testing and providing feedback.

@kiwad
I was referring to the CCK3 to Fields in D7 upgrade path, which appears to be less of a concern now, hence Yched's comment.

CCK2 -> CCK3 does not appear to be a problem at all. As I understand it, the only difference between CCK2 and CCK3, is the inclusion of the Multigroup module and some small changes to the base CCK module required by the Multigroup module. Otherwise CCK2 and CCK3 are largely kept in sync.

My general impression is that the problems unique to CCK3 are Multigroup problems. And most of those seem to be strange behavior when Multigroup interacts with other contrib modules, which is to be expected. For instance, we are currently trying to patch the Display Suite modules so they play nice with multi-group fields.

My conclusion is that Multigroup is the only reason to use CCK3, but if you need it, you should use it. Just expect some weirdness here and there.

I am getting strange behavior with the multigroup option. I am creating a content type for Video Lectures, and each Lecture can have multiple speakers. In views, when I retrieve the content, it is concatenating the multigroup fields into one (see the attachment for a screenshot). Am I utilizing this thing incorrectly?

I am using some replacement to put together and format the input information as follows. Is there a problem with using replacement patterns?

[field_video_speaker_image_fid] [field_video_speaker_value]
[field_video_speaker_organization_value]
[field_video_speaker_position_value]

justinm715: I would recommend filing a new ticket for this issue to get a prompt response. The discussion in this ticket mainly revolves around the state of the module as a whole and the plans for it moving forward.

I'm really finding this thread a little hard to follow and probably not the best format for a "Current State of a Project" description. Is there a page somewhere that is being updated as to the status of this module? If there is not then can we have someone do that and have the equivalent of one of the many "Summary Posts" above as the content?

On a separate note, is there any idea as to when the the 6.x-3.x version of CCK will be released? I need this feature now and i'm wondering if I can bank of this release or if i should implement something like http://www.darcynorman.net/2008/05/02/creating-a-custom-compound-field-f... for my needs. I obviously don't want an exact date but if someone could say something like "sorry we're too busy working on Drupal 7" or your actual sentiments that would give me a good indication :D

... also ;)

Perhaps Multigroup should be a separate submodule for D7, just like http://drupal.org/project/references and we can close this thread. 3/4 of the commens is "subscribe"

Since the release of December 6, is the version 6.x-3.x-dev of the CCK module have enough evolved during the last year to be be usable without any major risk of corrupting databases or breaking any other module dependencies?

I wish the following 2 bugs are fixed but looks like most are looking forward to the D7 upgrade so I am not sure anything further would be done:

1) Add a image file upload in a multigroup node. Uploaded a file but now I cannot remove the uploaded image even I pressed the remove button

2) For some reason I had to load multiple forms on one page and submit all changes with one submit button using JQuery. All changes in multigroup submit failed with "\sites\all\modules\contrib\cck\modules\content_multigroup\content_multigroup.node_form.inc on line 369." All the non-multigroup data saved just fine.

Anyone has the same experience and able to solve them please please please let me know

@lavino: please submit separate tickets for those.

#329: I am using 6.x-3.x-dev (Dec 6th, 2010) in production site, this version very stable and working fine with Views. Since CCK support PHP Code for each field then I am not worry about module dependencies, with just a simple PHP Code you can avoid to install another modules.

Edit: I am confidence CCK developers can release 6.x-3.x-beta1 now!

Hello,

Any ideas on creating multigroups programmatically in custom node? I have a situation where I have to repeat the multigroup for 35 times in a custom node content . I have been looking this from past one week with no possible solutions. Any hint of how to approach the above issue is greatly appreciated.

@nilla054: As has been mentioned, this issue is to discuss the current state of the Multigroup Module and not to solve specific support questions. Please submit your question as a separate issue.

obrienmd, Would you mind to please explain what Micro is? I was not able to understand what it is from reading the page.

...please don't do this here. @drupalmeister: please open a support request to that module's issue queue asking this question. This is CCK's issue queue and replying to such things here is issue hijacking or spamming at the very least.

with almost 350 comments, it's really time to stop subscribing to this please. For all intents and purposes this is a dead issue-- the d7 effort is proceeding in a completely different way.

@WorldFallz - I don't agree. I'm very interested in the progress of CCK3 for version 6. The timing of the release of D7 is such that I can't think about migrating right now. I'm in the middle of creating a function on our site, part of which depends on the multigroup module. I need to finish what I've started before I can think about migration, so I need this function to work properly first. It works great, except that I need to be able to use tokens for triggered actions, and there are none generated at this time.

I was grateful to see that an update came out yesterday. I'm still hoping for token support for Content Multigroup. Perhaps if this: http://drupal.org/node/520956 is still in progress, Token will recognize more than the first field in the group.

apologies for double post.

If I understand correctly...

  1. There are several projects that are working on different approaches to this problem in D7.
  2. Once these modules have developed some and the playing field has settled down, it is expected that there will be an upgrade path from CCK3 to at least one of these D7 solutions.
  3. CCK3 for D6 will continue to be maintained and updated along with CCK2.
  4. For all intents and purposes, CCK3 is currently stable and can be used on production sites (at least it is currently being used on many production sites).
  5. Any further issues regarding bugs, feature requests, or support requests for CCK3 should be submitted separately as their own issues. Under no circumstances should they be added to this thread.

Given all of this, there doesn't seem to be any reason for anyone to post anything else here, which I think is what WorldFallz was getting at. The state of the multigroup is now known as well as can be known. New issues should be posted in new issues.

The one remaining thing to do, as far as I can see, is to finally release CCK3 into the world. So I will now kneel down and humbly beg the maintainers of this exquisite module to please post an official release of CCK3. Please. You can list it as unsupported and put a warning in the readme file, as long as you let it be seen on the main CCK project page. There are already 13,776 sites using this dev version, so its not like its a huge secret or something. But if you release it, even as unsupported, then people will stop coming here and posting in an attempt to figure out what the deal is. Please stop the madness.

Feel free to reply with your actions, rather than post #353. :-)

I'm going to close this issue, I'm not sure of any benefit to keeping it open. It is kind of unusable at the moment because it covers so much territory.

I think the relevant questions are:

1) Why don't you create a release? I'm working on that now, trying to clean up all the multigroup issues like this one.
2) What is the upgrade path from CC2->CCK3? None, just swap the code, enable the multigroup module, and see if there are any updates to be run.
3) What happens in D7? Not sure yet, lots of projects still evolving but it looks like one or another will be able to pick this up.
4) How do you go backwards from CCK3->CCK2? You may be able to just swap the code if you have simple fields but there could be problems. Going backwards is never a supported path and no one has time to test and debug a 'downgrade' path.

There is nothing to subscribe to. Enough is enough. since people can't seem to stop themselves from subscribing to a 350+ comment issue that has been beaten to death, as well as answered and closed by the module maintainer I'm locking it. If any of the maintainers would like me to unlock it again just let me know.
