Hi all.
I manage a website that is about to go through a translation phase from English to German and French. We are going to hire a professional translation services company to do the translations. The scope is simple enough:
- Translate several nodes, several blocks, the menu, and the footer.
- It is not a requirement to translate the Drupal Admin etc. as most visitors are simply anonymous.
From my understanding, the translation company has worked with XML/XHTML in the past and uses a tool that keeps track of translated strings so, as the translations progress, they become much faster.
Question 1: is there a contributed module that tracks translated strings and applies them across designated nodes or is the export/import of XML/XHTML the better solution?
Question 2: we have unused domains for use with French and German. Is a multi-site installation the way to go in this case? Are there drawbacks I should consider?
Thanks in advanced,
Dan

ICanLocalize module
Hi Dan,
We have created a module and system specifically to make this easier. http://drupal.org/project/icanlocalize
A site using our module was recently featured on the drupal home page. http://drupal.org/node/442712
From our "Translation Dashboard" you choose what nodes and blocks you want translated. The module keeps track of what has been translated and what needs updating since the last translation. Only new or changed text is sent for translation if a node is updated since the last translation.
I don't know of any drawbacks of a multi-site installation. The language negotiation by domain names works very well.
Smart website translation
Hi Daneesia,
I work for a company called MotionPoint and we specialize in website translation; however, we're different from any other company out there for the mere fact that we make it easy for you and your organization to language enable a website.
Reading at your post it seems that you're concerned about a lot of different technical aspects of the process. We support all technologies and web techniques, we even translate images and Flash files (often time we make them SEO friendly following Google best practices for Flash development).
Please check our newly redesigned website at www.motionpoint.com obviously we're using our technology to have it available in 11 languages. Make sure to visit our FAQ section in this section you will find answer to most of your questions.
Please let me know what you think.
