I needed to let the users build lists of other users ; the solution was the CCK userreference field. Then, names were rendered in a vertical way instead of a comma separated list. This small sub-module let the admin choose a "Comma-separated" display of the items as does the Text Formatter module.
Uncompress the joined userreferencecomma directory and place it in the cck_formatters directory, then go to Admin > Site building > Modules and enable the "User reference with comma" module in the CCK group.
You can now choose a "Comma-separated" display of your userreference fields.
