Perhaps there is merit in presenting the themes differently?

  • Theme name:
  • Developed by:
  • Version / build number:
  • Theme engine (if any):
  • Columns: 1, 2, 3
  • Layout: fixed, ice, liquid
  • Source order: 123, 213, 312, etc
  • Tableless: yes, no
  • Known browser problems: IE/Win, IE/Mac, FF/Win etc etc

This will make the choice considerably easier. Also a mandatory thumbnail of the default look would be good.

Thanks

I agree. The contributed themes are presented very differently, making it hard to pick one without just downloading and trying them all. Take a look at http://www.oswd.org/designs/search/advanced/ - there are other properties that might be relevant to use - like validation, color and such...

A more standard identification would make things much easier on the end user.

The discussion on Drupal usability has recently been reinvigorated (http://drupal.org/node/141043). Although at the meta-level, I am confident in defending that this issue also belongs to the usability category. Therefore this post can be regarded as a bump.
I am not the only one to have started this discussion: http://drupal.org/node/102624

To the site maintainers: what can we (users/developers/visitors) do to get this issue resolved?
