Using Calendar to format Dates without Views?

MERCI leverages Date API, but because of the complexity of the structure of Resources, Buckets, and placeholder Reservations we haven't tried to create date based Views for much beyond Reservations. We do have some code to show upcoming Reservations for Resources where the relationship is 1-1. Currently that is simple listing the Reservations by Date. Rather than adding the functionality to create that as a View, I was wondering if there was any examples of leveraging Calendar to format an array of dates directly from another module?
