An interesting feature would be to be able to define in which region we could display the breadcrumb instead of hacking page.tpl.php

The default theme templates are merely a starting point, an example; the whole concept of templates is so you can change the output, layout etc to suit your needs. This is why Drupal has template suggestions.

However, I've never really understood why every theme position the breadcrumb across the page (i.e. above the sidebars and node content).
You usually have a menu or submenu on the left sidebar. With the default template you get the breadcrumb starting above the left hand side menu. In most of the case, one would like to have the breadcrumb positioned above the node content.
