Help!!!

For starters I pretty new to drupal and a complete neophyte when it come to php so please bear with me. I was forced to rebuild permissions for an install this morning and after I did this all images on my site appear as simple text fields, for all roles including admin, as well as when I try to upload new ones they appear as a ? I figure it's probably a permissions issue so I tried checking and restoring permissions on the UI as well as rebuilding the permissions several times to no avail.

The images are still stored in the DB so that's not the issue either and I'm stuck here trying desperately to fix it. I thought of trying to fix the permissions manually from PHPmyAdmin but had no idea what I was looking at and stopped before I did more harm than good.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

It's hard to say what's wrong with the amount of information provided. What's the markup look like for the outputted images? Does the file exist at the path that specified in the HTML img tags? What's the path specified in the files table for those images?

Considering this was open for months without response, I'm guessing that the problem may have already been solved. Please reopen (with requested additional information) if this problem still exists.
