Flowplayer is using GPL 3 licence (and a commercial licence).

A link to download Flowplayer should be provided instead of including it with this module.

The Flowplayer Free version is released under the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 3 (GPL).

Agreed. Not only is Flowplayer's GPL v3 license not backward-compatible, but it also includes additional terms regarding indemnification and branding.

I have sent a message to the current maintainer.

Hello Rob Loach. I am writing you because Flowplayer API contains files released with license GPL License v3, which is not the license used from Drupal.

Please comment on http://drupal.org/node/722554.

Best regards.

I guess we should send a preemptive message to all module maintainers. GPL 2 vs GPL 3 is confusing for a lot of people. :-)

Are there any updates on this report?

I did check again with the latest dev version (2010-May-10).

Unfortunately, the module still ship with GPL3 content, the SWF Flowplayer files.

2 years later, and all versions of the module still ship with GPL3 binaries-only:
http://drupalcode.org/project/flowplayer.git/tree/refs/heads/7.x-1.x:/fl...
http://drupalcode.org/project/flowplayer.git/tree/refs/heads/6.x-1.x:/fl...

There's an issue which would solve the problem, but it hasn't been applied yet: #722604: Move to Libraries API to remove Flowplayer binaries and GPL 3 code

Title: flowplayer » Module includes Flash player protected with GPL 3 licence. » flowplayer module includes Flash player protected with GPL 3 licence

Two items:

  • Several years after being notified of the problem the maintainer has still not resolved the problem.
  • Because the git server doesn't support modification of previous commits I don't know if it'd legally make much difference - even if the files are removed it'd still be possible to access them via git.

Is it possible to have the git repo removed and then let the maintainer re-commit the code minus the unwanted files?

It took 5 years, but I reached out to @robloach directly and he finally removed the GPLv3 code from git with http://cgit.drupalcode.org/flowplayer/commit/?id=d41e4e3f94a6c1c7c470c3c...

It's still available in the supported release, but we are making progress.
