When disabling comments for a content type, the comments feature should give you an option to not show options on existing content of the same content type. For example, I create a 100 blogs with comments enabled, I later decide not to show comments on my 100 blog articles. Right now, if I disable the comments they won't show up on future blog posts but they will still show up on existing blog posts and I have to go through one by one and disable the comments. Not good.
I don't know the reason for leaving comments enable when you've diabled them for the that content type, but assuming there's a good reason for this, there should be an option to remove comments for all existing content of that cotent type.

swentel CreditAttribution: swentel commentedThat's not related with this module :) You could move this to the Drupal Core queue of the comment module however.
