I'd like to have a large image displayed with thumbnails of other images in the gallery below it (on the same page). I've used FGallery but would like to have more theming capabilities.

kmontyI actually wrote a lot of custom theme functions to make their photoessays look like that, but it did not require hacking the module! You really have to understand Drupal's templating system + be a little creative to make it all happen, but it's definitely possible.
I'll eventually publish a howto on my company blog on this but not sure when.
