After reading the Subsites project description, there seems to be some overlap with Organic Groups and Panels (I could also simply be missing the point here).
I'm currently looking for a way to build an extensible array of subsites, so I was wondering why you decided to create a new module for this functionality, rather than going for OG and/or Panels, or building on top of those. Would it be possible to briefly explain this? Thanks.

davyvdb CreditAttribution: davyvdb commentedSubsites has pretty much nothing in common with OG/Panels. You might be able to do the same thing with context though. The problem is that context is pretty unintuitive for non-tech people. Subsites was developed for webmasters with little knowledge of the inner working of Drupal.
The use case for which it was developed is to create simple sections on a website with a few differences in look. Mostly these are campaign or advertising takeovers. It is used on a few Belgian broadcaster sites like vt4.be. Using subsites the webmasters can very easily brand a program with a sponsor's design/logo/...
