The country field on the Drupal.org profile lists Zaire, which hasn't been the name of that country since 1997. It's now called Democratic Republic of Congo.

killes@www.drop.org CreditAttribution: killes@www.drop.org commentedShould we use the long form or some abbreviation?
We also should then update the value in the database for those who chose Zaire.

Anonymous (not verified) CreditAttribution: Anonymous commentedThere are two nations called Congo:
Republic of the Congo (a.k.a. Congo-Brazzaville)
Democratic Republic of the Congo (a.k.a. Congo-Kinshasa)
This nominal association of the two nations with their capitals, I don't know if it's an appropriate way to name them on Drupal.org.
Wikipedia says:
and
I don't want to provide the definitive word on this, but I think "Congo-Brazzaville" and "Congo-Kinshasa" may be acceptable. It also has the advantage of placing them next to each other in an alphabetical list.

Anonymous (not verified) CreditAttribution: Anonymous commentedThere is another issue report for Vietnam that in the countries list is reported as Viet nam (which has been reported to not be the correct form from a Vietnamese user); maybe it would be created a unique report.
The major problem is updating the user profiles, as changing the list entries would cause some users to not have a country associated.

gregglesI'm happy to write and execute queries to fix things like this. If we're switching from one country to two countries, though, we can't do that :( Maybe the best solution is to create the two new countries and leave the old one there to allow people to self-select into the right place.
Can we get some sort of definitive answer on the right thing to do here from someone who lives in the area?
Also, it seems most of those folks are spammers anyway.

Anonymous (not verified) CreditAttribution: Anonymous commentedZaire only needs to be changed to Democratic Republic of Congo. Right now, there's also a country in the profile named "Congo" which refers to the Republic of Congo.
Democratic Republic of Congo often goes by an abbreviated name "Congo-Kinshasa," but it is not official. It would also only make sense to change the name to Congo-Kinchasa if you also changed "Congo" to "Congo-Brazzaville."

gregglesThanks for the explanation. How about this new title?

apadernoThe official name of Italy is Repubblica italiana (Italian Republic), but it is not used in any country lists. Do you mean that Congo-Kinshasa should not be used in a list of countries?

Anonymous (not verified) CreditAttribution: Anonymous commentedI think the names should be changed as the current title (changed by greggles in #7). I hear these countries referred to by acronyms (DRC, DR Congo) and by full official names but the most common is by reference to the capital city. I hear it on the media, it's referred to in Wikipedia, and it's how people refer to the countries in day-to-day business.
Come to think of it, I remember seeing it on signs for phone calling stores and money changers in Francophone countries, which both Congo republics are. I'm very confident this is the right change.

gregglesThere's also the point you made earlier:
Let's leave it around for a bit longer to see if anyone has any feedback and then I think we can go for it.

newbies CreditAttribution: newbies commentedI came across these comments today. based on:
"It also has the advantage of placing them next to each other in an alphabetical list."
I can understand if you adopt Congo-Kinshasa and Congo-Brazzaville for both countries. But originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), I would say that it is referred to as DRC, which has a French version of RDC (Republique Democratique du Congo)

greggles@bangpound (or anyone else) could you write the queries for this?
I could review and run them and make the manual admin changes.

killes@www.drop.org CreditAttribution: killes@www.drop.org commentedThis still needs to be addressed.

batje CreditAttribution: batje commentedI agree with @newbies in #11 that
- Zaire should be renamed to DR Congo (Using plain DRC might not mean a lot to people outside the region)
- Congo should be renamed to Congo-Brazzaville
This would reflect how both Congolese people call their respective countries. It would be great if someone indeed could write these queries. (for D6, just in time for the upgrade)

mgiffordI was just looking at #1068840: core/includes/standard.inc contains inaccurate country data
We should probably just standardize on includes/standard.inc and fix two birds with one patch.

killes@www.drop.org CreditAttribution: killes@www.drop.org commentedbatje and I got together here at DrupalCon and tried to rename as follows on dev server.
the following needs to be changed:
1) edit
https://www.drupal.org/admin/config/people/profile/edit/17
1) remove Zaire
2) add "DR of the Congo" in the alphabetical order
3) remove "Congo"
4) add "Republic of the Congo" in the alphabetical order
run the following queries.
update profile_value set value = 'Republic of the Congo' where fid = 17 and value = 'Congo';
update profile_value set value = 'DR of the Congo' where fid = 17 and value = 'Zaire';
this addresses the immediate problem, anything more fancy can be done later.
