Add a feature request if you would like this included in core.
I have hacked the module to append "…", although I'm not completely happy with the results (depending on where the "break" breaks text). Ideally, the text that is linked would be configurable. Styling could be applied via CSS, so you could even replace it with a graphic.
It also would be nice to have this added as a link in the RSS feed (I have this as an outstanding feature request).

I added the following to a version of xtemplate I'm customising. Still working my way through learning drupal, but doing little things like this helps hugely in understanding the flow of the code.
I must agree that with some themes it is not always obvious when an article continues - often "Read More" is lost in a jumble of links at the bottom of a node.
This code goes in the xxx.theme file in the root of an xtemplate based theme.
