I tried the plugin today and it worked for Firefox. But when you check your site with several benchmark pages, all things can happen.
http://tools.pingdom.com can handle embedded css images - great, you see a real improvement
http://www.webpagetest.org simulates IE7 - what failed to render some parts of my page
http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ completely fails to recognize them, sending some strange queries to my page like
sites/default/files/css/data:image/gifbase64,R0lGODlhAQABAID/AMDAwAAAACH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==
With version 1.0 those tests run ok, but neither of them see embedded images.
