Is it possible to create groups of attachments of a single node?
Each group should be able to contain one or more attached documents, for example:

Nodetype story: student records

1st group: images of particular student
2nd group: videos of particular student
3rd group: essays of particular student
etc.

Is it possible to simulate this feature with existing modules somehow?

I think you could use the CCK module to create the different content types.
Then use the Views module to create the lists of each type filterable by user.
Then you'd need to do a little manipulation of the user page to provide links to the different views.
