I was halfway done w/ writing a module that does the same thing as webform when I ran accross it in the contributions directory in CVS.

not only that but but i also have a forms.module in progress in contrib as well... some combined efforts are _definitely_ in order. my long term goals are to have a generic forms creation / handling api (in the form of a form.inc) in core... including the form_*() functions as well as some validation functions, and some error handling functions. this would then allow other modules to take advantage of the API to add custom forms (or parts of forms) ... i.e. the new profile.module, contact.module, and event.module (and i'm sure others would follow).
