I'm having a hard time trying to create a custom login form for this theme.

Changed template.php functions to be celju_ instead of phptemplate_, that possibly was your issue. I see no other reason why your custom login page would not work.

Fixes are in 6.x-1.x-dev and will be available in 6.x-1.4 release.
