IMCE is an image browser, so why display filenames as the default? Would make much better sense to have an option to show a page of thumbnails, eg. at max. 128x128 (and/or other sizes), together with image information (filename, size, date, etc), similar to Windows File manager?

IMCE is NOT just an image browser... it is also used to browse other types of files.
Images are just the most common use for IMCE.
Right from the home page IMCE descriptoin:
"IMCE is an image/file uploader and browser..."

iantresman CreditAttribution: iantresman commentedWhy wouldn't you want the option to show thumbnails, if "Images are just the most common use for IMCE"?
Make filenames the default, provide an option to select thumbnails, and an option to make thumbnails the default, and everyone is happy. And other filetypes can be represented by an icon.

strangely, a photo i have in the same dir for some reason (from image assist i guess) is showing a thumbnail next to the file. this seems like a natural feature, and if its some other file type how bout a set of icons to show what it is (audio, pdf, whatever)

pixelsweatshop CreditAttribution: pixelsweatshop commentedor at least a single generic icon for files other than images. With the varying file types, I would imagine it would be difficult to have a different icon for every one. it opening a whole can of worms.
