Did a new, 100% clean (database and all) installation of Drupal 6.17 for a new site. Database settings go fine, all other settings go fine, and when the last step finishes, I get this:

warning: preg_match() [function.preg-match]: Compilation failed: range out of order in character class at offset 10 in /var/www/html/mysite/modules/user/user.module on line 393.

Congratulations, Drupal has been successfully installed.

Please review the messages above before continuing on to your new site.

The mail for the root user arrived as well.

So, did the installation screw up and I'll have some poop popping up sooner or later, or is that normal in the latest version and can be ignored?

I think you want the top one here. Bascially it's a bug, probably not fatal, and a fix is being worked on.
