After the introduction of the ability for anonymous users to post _comments_ using a name (as oposed to always "Anonymous"), it sounds kinda logical that anonymous users would also be able to post _topics_ to a forum using a real name, instead of just "anonymous".
Attached patch adds this functionality, much the same way as the comment module was changed. It also uses the setting from the comments (variable comment_anonymous) to decide whether to allow anonymous topic posting with name or not.
Philosophical question: shouldn't this be in node rather than in forum... Should have thought of that before coding it in forum :-/
Cheers,
Luc

MichelleKills said it doesn't apply anymore, not that it isn't relevant. Given http://drupal.org/node/149617 I think it's still quite relevant.
I can also see it having a wider scope than the forum module. On my site, I have an area directory and anyone can submit to it. I tried adding CCK fields to capture contact info for the poster but wasn't happy with that solution. This may be a better way.
Honestly, it may be a couple months before I can give this a good look but hopefully I can get a patch that applies against 7.x before code freeze. If anyone else wants to take up the challange before I get to it, feel free. :)

Michelle@Steel Rat: There is 0 chance that a patch made in 2004 (which is probably Drupal 4.5 or so) will apply against D7. If you have the skills/time to reroll the patch, go for it.

Steel Rat CreditAttribution: Steel Rat commentedUnderstood, Michelle. I was simply going by your post from last October and was hoping there had been some progress. Unfortunately I have meager PHP skills. I'd love to participate, but I'd probably only slow someone down.

kaakuu CreditAttribution: kaakuu commentedI am able to do this ( Anon users posting their name and email ) via CCK fields - however this has two problems
#
when Anon author is searched by the name he used ( and thus he is no longer "anon" ) it has to be found from the contents tab - though ideally it should be from users tab OR a common field for both contents and users AS it is odd that to search an user once we have to hit contents tab and to search a registered user we have to hit users tab [ issue submitted at http://drupal.org/node/523680 ]
#
Search reveals the email ( in the list of search when teaser is shown below each title ) when email is supposed to be kept private.
