Support for Drupal 7 is ending on 5 January 2025—it’s time to migrate to Drupal 10! Learn about the many benefits of Drupal 10 and find migration tools in our resource center.
The default path takes over if a role with access to publish content "publishes" "unpublished" content from the "administrative" console.
I don't know if this is content-type specific; but it is extremely frustrating for maintaining the site.

Fabianx CreditAttribution: Fabianx commentedThe workaround is to install:
http://drupal.org/project/pathauto_persist
This works and will be the only way to fix this for 6.x-1.4 as behavior will not be changed for 6.x-1.x tree as stated by maintainer Dave Reid here:

klonosI think this should be kept open till either this #937826: Merge into Pathauto ? is fixed (not if the issue is marked as such but when/if the merge actually happens) or we come up with a different solution. Then we can check if it also fixes this use case and if it does, close it.
Now, it seems that there is consideration to NOT include the fix in the 6.x-1.x branch (as Fabian has already explained in #1), but this is not a final decision yet either. Again, lets wait and see/act.

klonos...if it turns out that it pathauto_persist doesn't get merged in the 6.x-1.x branch, then we should urge people that want to get this solved to either upgrade to the latest 6.x-2.x with the merged code, or use the separate module along with whichever 6.x-1.x version of pathauto they choose to stick with (for any reason they have to do that).

Dave ReidThis is a duplicate of #936222: Merge in pathauto_persist module functionality to prevent losing manual aliases with node_save() calls
