I've been researching and came up with an idea, which i wrote down on a Metatags issue here.

It dwells on the possibility of an integration of Page Titles with the still in-plan Metatags module... or a merger somewhere in the future.

Ideally, it would make all Meta tags as CCK Fields, working as Entity unit, tied to other units (nodes, the site in general, etc) and as such, Page Titles would also be Fields, like Description, or Keywords, or even Site Verification codes.

The possibilities for SEO extensibility would be limitless, from Views to Panels to other modules that use CCK/Fields and Entities...

The version tag for this issue is quite unrealistic; i just wanted to note this information for possible future usage.

I was planning on the DRUPAL-7--3 branch being Fields oriented, but I wanted to get this phase of development finished first. Intgrating with a Meta Tags module probably makes sense - but I'm open to discussion.

Well, Metatags for D7 will be heavily token-based, and we're planning on adding field tokens to the Token module in contrib. Plus we've already found that nodewords and pagetitle do a lot of duplication, so it would be good if we could coordinate.
