Issue Summary
You'll want to go to http://developers.verticalresponse.com and click on Get Your API key. It appears that Vertical Response is no longer answering emails at the email address on the VR main page.

This has changed yet again - there's no more "Get Your API Key"
The simplest way to get started is signing up through Message Agency's partner account:

* if you already have an account, request API access here: http://messageagency.com/vr-api

I requested an API code through them last week (for an existing account). I haven't heard anything back from them yet. Any update on this?

There is actually no "api code" anymore.
Once your account is converted to an API account, you'll be able to use the api with your existing credentials.
