icecreamyou commentedYour approach has the problem that someone can write a whole post and then get to the end and realize they have to register, and then just abandon it because they don't want to be bothered. It solves a somewhat different problem: you want to make logging in and registering easier, whereas I want to make it unnecessary. However your approach is definitely an improvement over what we've got now, especially if care is taken to keep the register/login elements at the top of the form with a nice big explanatory message.
But anyway: yes, I will port this to D7 when I get a chance. It's not high on my priority list because this module was more proof-of-concept than anything; I'm more concerned about getting my modules that have thousands of users ported first. However, I have no intention of abandoning this module, and it will get a D7 version.

icecreamyou commentedThis is still not really on my radar, sorry. I have several more important modules that need some serious work as well as a lot of non-Drupal projects.

nigelw commented@IceCreamYou, when you have a chance, can you let us know if this might be back on your radar sometime soon? :)

icecreamyou commentedUnfortunately I'm no longer running any community sites, so I don't have the bandwidth to start this project up again. However, I will give commit access to anyone who posts a patch in the queue, so if anyone is interested in improving the module please do go for it!

doublejosh commentedYou can do this with this recipe...
You can even go a little further and control the post registration experience with these tools...

gisleThese two modules offer somewhat similar functionality and exist in Drupal 7-compatible versions:
