$forward_message and other vars sending relative URLs in emails

My client tried to put an image into the $forward_message field on the settings page (via CKEditor) but that results in an image tag with a relative source of http://sites/default/files/... Is there a way to run those through a filter like pathologic to make them absolute (http://www.example.com/sites/default/files/...)?
